Job Searching Is a Team Sport
How to find your support team and pivot from unemployment to a new career with a job you love
Job searching is rough. Especially when you’re trying to pivot to something new.
We’re human. We’re built for connection, not rejection. And sending out job applications brings a lot of rejection. Or ghosting. Ugh.
Some days it just feels too hard and depressing.
I am Karla Yoder and there are days when I don’t have the motivation to tailor one more cover letter. When I’m sure no one will ever hire me.
Please Find a Support Team
We need support from those who understand. People who are feeling the same things. People who can remind us of the value we bring. Who will hype us up and cheer us on.
That's why I believe in Job Search Councils (JSCs). Why I matched Career Pivot subscribers into JSCs back in February. JSCs are groups of job seekers who follow the Never Search Alone process together.
My JSC got started recently and it’s been great. I’m part of a team with a shared goal: get everyone a job.
And not just any job, but a good job, the right job. The one where they do what they love in an organization that suits them.
We’re doing that by being real about our struggles and asking one another for help.
How to Join a Job Search Council
I strongly recommend that you join a Job Search Council today. You’ll be matched with at least four other people and one of you will be the moderator.
Please be understanding. Not all JSCs are a success.
You might need to try again to find a group that works. Moderators drop out. Good meeting times are hard to find. Some members will ghost.
We are all messy humans, after all.
Be Realistic About the Search
Most of us need a job ASAP. Money is tight in my household, too!
But there is a difference between finding a job and the job. We may need income to pay the bills now. Yet, it will take time to find the job that gets me excited to log on each morning.
My JSC is helping me slow down to speed up. I am working through a proven process, step by step. It can feel slow, but it's actually shown to be the fastest way to a dream job.
Figuring out what I want and where I fit is the first step. Then it's time to network. Most of us will find our dream jobs through networking, not fiddling with our resume.
And networking is most fruitful when it is focused. Focused on the roles that fascinate me, the sectors I care about, the organizations I want to work for.
This is where my JSC is great. It helps me focus. Target my energies. Find job search success.
We can do this together!
