Good News! Multiple States Want to Hire You
Several states are heavily recruiting those laid off for state government roles
I am so proud of many state governors and public sector leaders. They are actively recruiting Federal staff, contractors, and consultants recently furloughed or laid off (or about to be) to state-level public sector jobs.
Many states are expediting the recruitment process for those recently separated from their dream jobs in the public sector. Here are three that stand out:
Fairfax County is helping fill 47,000 roles across Northern Virginia
Hawai’i is promising an offer letter within 14 days of your application.
North Carolina will have recruiters walk you through the hiring process
Several states recognize that Federal government layoffs are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the US public and private sector to hire the best and brightest candidates right now.

District of Columbia Has Two Websites For you
To be honest, I am unimpressed by the District’s efforts. I only list them here because there are so many Career Pivot subscribers in the DMV area. They promote two websites to help you survive layoffs and get a new job:
FedSupport: with ways to help those unemployed
Public Service Career Hub: to help you get a job in the DC government.
Fairfax County Wants You to Get Hired
Contrast DC’s efforts with those of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. They are organizing regular Career Fairs where employers want to hire you - on the spot.
They have 25,000 jobs for you in Fairfax County and 45,000 open positions in Northern Virginia for those leaving the Federal ecosystem.

Hawai’i wants ex-Feds to move there for opportunities across all islands. They have 60+ current job openings in all USAID sectors: health, climate, policy, planning, tech, disaster resilience, etc.

New Mexico ex-Federal Worker Resources
New Mexico unemployed Federal worker resources inlude links to 675 State job openings and all jobs available in New Mexico.
I do have to caution that New Mexico and Maine both seem to be repackaging existing state employment efforts as supporting ex-Federal ecosystem workers, without anything special for us.
New York State Wants You
Governor Kathy Hochul announced a new “You’re Hired” initiative to recruit talented public sector workers into State service.
“The federal government might say, ‘You’re fired,’ but here in New York, we say, ‘You’re hired.’ In fact, we love federal workers, whatever your skills, we value public service.”
Reading that line makes me so proud. That’s how elected officials should be talking about their staff. And she backs up that talk with 2,200+ open state government roles.
North Carolina Recruiters Will Help You
The State of North Carolina will link you with a recruiter to help you get a state job. The recruiter will respond in 1 business day. No other state offers this level of concierge service.
That is serious outreach to unemployed ex-Federal agency, contractor, consultant staff!
Side note: I live in Chapel Hill, and I can vouch for the Research Triangle area as parental paradise. It also has a high concentration of global health professionals - many of our peers! You’ll find a receptive home here.
